A cookbook printed in Leuven in 1612
The dishes draw on Antonius Magirus’s Koock-Boeck ofte familieren Keuken-Boeck. Published in Leuven in 1612, it offers a rare record of cooking in the Low Countries during the age of Albert and Isabella.
Brussels in the age of Albert and Isabella
Under the Archdukes, Brussels was a refined and active centre of the Duchy of Brabant. The Coudenberg court, Joyous Entries, processions and festivities gave the city a cosmopolitan brilliance.
Albert and Isabella governed from 1598. The Twelve Years’ Truce, agreed in 1609, encouraged political, economic and cultural renewal. Their patronage supported the Flemish Baroque and artists including Rubens, Jan Brueghel, Otto van Veen and Theodore van Loon.
